The cloak of heavy mist unfolds
Many-hilled is the ascent to Waineki
The ascent is made fragrant by ‘awapuhi
Beloved, too, is the fragrance of mokihana
That settles on the forest trail
Steep, indeed, is the trail to Kawaikini
But its difficulties become nothing to me
When the ‘ōlapa wave like beckoning hands
The voices of the malihini fall silent
And I attend to the manu ‘ai lehua
The voice of the kama‘āina encourages me
“Come here, flower of the ‘ilima”
There in the upland of Alaka‘i
Is the creeping lehua that I love
You and I are at ‘Aipō
We are three at the Lūpua’s invitation
Steep-ridged Molokama is closed to us
The huki-‘auwai mist blocks our view
But when we reach Kilohana’s shelf
The mist clears and thought grows buoyant
