Bernice Pauahi Bishop Heritage Center, Entry Room
Door Handles and Faceplates
from the original Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel at Kaiwiʻula, Oʻahu
The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel was built to honor our Princess’ deep love for ke Akua and her devotion to the Christian faith. Pauahi was raised by women who ardently welcomed and supported the missionaries upon their arrival in Hawaiʻi in 1820. Many of Pauahi’s mākua and elder aliʻi had been converted in the ten or so years prior to her birth. She further spent a decade of her adolescent life living at the Chiefs’ Children’s School (a mission school). The Princess lived her life embodying the tenants of Christianity and was known for her extraordinarily charitable and generous nature.
The original Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel was built on the grounds of the Kaiwiʻula campus by Charles Reed Bishop and gifted to the schools on December 19, 1897. The doorplates on the doors here at the Heritage Center are the original doorplates from this church.
