A Brand New Princess.
We are delighted to be the ones to announce the news that will bring joy to all corners of Hawaiʻi, that at 9:15 a.m. this past Saturday, October 16, PRINCESS VICTORIA KAʻIULANI CLEGHORN was born here in Honolulu to
“Like a kāhuli of changing colors in the sunlight
Are the bright flats shimmering at Maukele
How slow are you, dallying so
Dallying are you, the one with the canoe
It is you and now they are gone.”— *
that being the royal daughter of the aliʻi, C. Kapaʻakea and A. Keohokālole, who have passed without being able hold their grandchild, she who is also the royal wife of the chief Archie [Archibald Cleghorn] of this town.
The birth of the new aliʻi fills the loyal subjects with boundless joy and happiness, as through her, the chiefly line currently in power shall multiply and prosper. This is the first child to be born of Keoho’s royal children, and as such, their royal offspring will inevitably become an unrivaled favorite for them all.
We pray for the Heavens’ kindness and grace, that they may watch over her in her youth, and that they may lengthen her days, as well as those of her royal mother, so that she may birth many more aliʻi children.
*It is not uncommon for aliʻi to be acknowledged indirectly through mele assigned to or associated with them, rather than being mentioned directly by name. One of the more recognizable examples of this is the use of “Kau lī lua i ke anu o Waiʻaleʻale” as a reference to David Kalākaua. This paukū mele above is referencing Kaʻiulani’s mother, Miriam Kapili Likelike.
