Nani He‘eia

Kaʻiwakīloumoku Mele Hoʻoheno Series
Kauwela 2021

Kumu hula and award-winning musician Manu Boyd shares some of his favorite mele Hawaiʻi in our new series, Mele Hoʻoheno – Cherished Songs. We invite you to join him (and some very special guests) as he explores the meaning and significance of each song while offering personal memories, reflections, and anecdotes that help bring the story to life. E nanea mai!

From the well-tended gardens at Waipao to Keʻalohi by the sea and Ahualaka off shore, “Nani Heʻeia” is a reflection of the timeless beauty of that Koʻolaupoko region anchored in moʻolelo shared by kūpuna of this generation.

Beautiful Heʻeia
Māʻeliʻeli above
Where country folks thrive
Gathering pāpaʻi crab
And delicious limu kohu

Heaps of palaʻā fern
Can be found at ʻIolekaʻa
And lovely Waipao
In the verdure
Of Haʻikū

        CHORUS:
        Dark Heʻeia, fair Heʻeia
        Heʻeia is truly beautiful!

Keʻalohi Point
Juts out to sea
Behold the broken corals
Of Heʻeia
And Ahualaka (sandbar)

Adorning hau blossoms
Attract Meheanu
Keeper of the pond
Teeming with fish
Plenty ʻamaʻama

Deep green cliffs
Of Koʻolaupoko
Inviting home
Of the distinguished elders
Unforgettable

Carried forth
By the Ulumano wind
Is the great love
Of the keeper of the lands
Abner Kaʻehu Pākī
Loving father
Of our aliʻi, Pauahi
