The `ōhāhāwainui
was used for several ailments. The sap healed the deep wounds of a warrior
who may have been severely cut during battle. An asthmatic could prepare
a mixture of `ōhāhāwainui
fruit and kukui nut to prevent life threatening asthma attacks. For a
new mother, the plant was also very effective in stimulating milk production.
Preparation for bad or deep cuts:
Take one tablespoon of breadfruit milk and the dust of the makaloa plant.
Mix these ingredients together and pour the mixture into the cut. Do this
twice daily until the wound is healed. Make sure the wound is very clean
before applying the mixture.
Preparation for Asthma:
Take 20 half ripe `ōhāhāwainui
fruits, four green kukui nuts, four tubers of `ōlena, a quart of young
puakenikeni shoots, mountain apple skin as much as can cover your palm,
a handful of 'ala'ala wai nui stems, two segments of red sugar-cane, and
two ripe noni fruits.
Pound these items together. Mix this with the juice
of the ti-root. Take this mixture three times a day for five consecutive
days. Salty foods should be avoided during the treatment.
Preparation for milk production:
With a tablespoon of `ōhāhāwainui
milk, mix the juice of 8 red spurge leaves, half of a partly dried coconut,
and half a segment of white sugar-cane. Meanwhile, a sweet potato is cooking.
Once potato is cooked, peel, scoop out the inside, and pour the mixture
in. The top is closed as pressure is gently applied so the juice is quickly
absorbed. The potato is then given to the patient.
If milk production is not restored after the patient has eaten the potato
a laxative should be taken for internal cleansing. After cleansing, it
is recommended that the patient eat a stew of papaya fruit and pork.
Please seek the guidance of your physician or traditional
healing specialist before beginning treatment of any kind. Also, please
remember that Hawaiian herbal remedies are always used in conjunction
with spiritual cleansing and pule (prayer).
