Ilioha

Ilioha is the dark green moss which grows on the rocks and beds of rivers and streams. In the past, drinking and swimming in these bodies of water did not present the same kinds of dangers as they do today. The ilioha was used as a remedy for cold sores and heart-burn.

To prepare for a cold sore: Take about a handful of the ilioha and leave it out to dry in the sun. Once dried, grind the moss into a powder and apply it to the sore.

To prepare for heart-burn: Add a tablespoon of salt to half a quart of moss. Add to it a young kikawaioa stem and shoot. Six well cooked taro leaves are also added. Mix these ingredients well.

Have the patient lie on his stomach eating the remedy slowly allowing it to do its work. Do this twice a day for five days. The patient should also be given kooʻokoʻolau tea during the treatment. After five days a laxative should be taken.

Please seek the guidance of your physician or traditional healing specialist before beginning treatment of any kind. Also, please remember that Hawaiian herbal remedies are always used in conjunction with spiritual cleansing and pule (prayer).
